Certified Dementia Practitioner certificates have been awarded to the staff at the new Memory Care Neighborhood at Allerton House Assisted Living in Hingham, following their completion of eight hours of core curriculum overseen by a CDP-Trainer. According to the National Council of Certified Dementia Care Practitioners, the certification was created “to promote standards of excellence in dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease education training to professionals and other caregivers who provide services to dementia clients.” The certification training provides education about Alzheimer’s disease, best practices in dementia care and changes in brain physiology among individuals with dementia.

The following direct care staff at the Welch Group’s newest memory care assisted living community received the CDP certification: Program Director Laurie Tranchell; Enrichment Coordinator Jeanette Champagne, Resident Services Director Cindy Hughes, RN; and Clinical Social Worker for Allerton House Communities Joyce Watson-O’Neil, MSW MPH.  According to O’Neil, the CDP certification achieved by the Welch staff goes beyond what the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs requires of staff overseeing care in an Alzheimer’s Program, which is seven hours of additional education and training in caring for individuals with dementia prior to working in a dementia care setting.

The Memory Care Neighborhood at Allerton House features a total of 16 rental apartments – 10 studios and three, two-bedroom companion suites and follows the Alzheimer’s Association Habilitation Therapy Methods.
