A day before a host of band headliners rocked Boston’s TD Garden to raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, the staff of Allerton House at Hancock Park in Quincy were doing their part to raise money to assist individuals and families hurt in the blast. For the month of May, staff at the Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group Assisted Living Community have been selling stickers of the letter “B” in the country store, taking spare change in a donation jar inside the store and selling Hilliard’s chocolate bars in the community’s lobby.

At the recent luncheon, complete with Fenway Franks and Boston Baked Beans, the staff of both the assisted living community and Hancock Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center celebrated, “We love Boston Day!” Staff set up a colorful popcorn machine and encouraged visitors, residents and staff members to donate whatever they could afford to the One Fund, established to help defray the medical bills of victims of the April blast. “To date the efforts of Allerton House and Hancock Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center have raised over $600 for the One Fund, and we are grateful for the support,” says Kelly Richards, marketing director for Allerton House at Hancock Park in Quincy.

The fact that most people achieve their maximum bone strength at age 30, and then begin to lose more bone than they make sounds pretty daunting. What’s a person to do in their 40s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s? Lots of things! And you can enjoy doing them.

Like so many other parts of the body, our bones respond to what we do, what we eat, and how much we know about the things that keep them strong and make them stronger.

What we eat and drink

Calcium is important for bone health. Calcium-rich foods like low-fat yogurt, cheese and milk, as well as leafy green vegetables and foods fortified with calcium will do your bones a world of good. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. So help yourself to some salmon, tuna, eggs and foods fortified with vitamin D, too. Things that aren’t so good for bone health are too much caffeine too much alcohol, and smoking. The menus at the Allerton House Assisted Living Communities located on the South Shore of Massachusetts are always full of ample opportunities to choose bone-strengthening, nutritious and delicious foods.

What we do

Staying active is good for bone health on many levels, too. Broken bones most often are the result of falls. Activities such as yoga and balance exercises make falls less likely. So do common-sense precautions like taking your time when walking, avoiding area rugs and other slippery surfaces, and making sure your environment is well lit. Exercise like walking is also a great way to strengthen bones and joints.

How much we know

The more we know, the better able we are to avoid the consequences of weakened bones. Be sure to talk with your doctor about bone density testing to learn how strong your bones are, whether your medicines may affect the health of your bones, what exercises are recommended, whether there are medications you can take to maintain or increase bone strength, and if calcium and vitamin D supplements are a good idea for you. Always consult your personal physician or medical practitioner before taking any vitamins or supplements or before beginning an exercise program.

Barker Tavern Executive Chef Juerg Kummer delighted residents of Village at Proprietors Green with an exquisite gourmet meal featuring a choice of Roasted Rack of Lamb Chops with a mint reduction sauce, served with green bean bundles wrapped in bacon and stuffed potatoes or Grilled Swordfish with Mediterranean vegetables and baked stuffed potatoes. Additionally a roasted butternut squash soup with chestnut cream, and home-made bread were offered. Following the main meal, guests were treated to the Barker Tavern’s signature dessert, a Raspberry Mille-Feuille, which is a homemade sugar cookie with raspberry and whipped cream.

The Barker Tavern chef, who has held center stage at the Scituate restaurant since 1994, worked alongside the senior living community’s Executive Chef Tom Jablonski and Dining Room Manager Edward Sawan. The food was elegantly prepared and presented, and paired with wine choices to complement the flavors of the meal. The event is just one of many such culinary adventures residents have come to enjoy and expect as residents of Village at Proprietors Green.

Village at Proprietors Green, the latest senior living community on the South Shore from Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group, offers independent living, assisted living and assisted living-memory care.

Reserve your spot at the community’s upcoming Chocolate Open House on February 5, from 1 – 3 PM by calling 888-905-2812 or visit online at: www.ProprietorsGreen.com
