Baby Animals Visit Allerton House in Weymouth

Sitting still and regal, a Silkie, enjoys the soothing strokes of resident Joann McLaughlin.

Pets and small animals make people of all ages feel good. Residents at Allerton House at Central Park know this is true and were delighted for a chance to visit with and pet a variety of baby farm animals, including bunnies, kids, and piglets from Farm Visits, a traveling petting farm. In older adults, studies have shown that pets can relieve stress and even help to fight off depression. It’s easy to see by the faces of residents that a visit by the baby animals is truly beneficial.

Each year during National Assisted Living Week, the Welch Group celebrates residents with week-long festivities in four Allerton House Assisted Living Communities along the South Shore. One of the highlights of the week is the Assisted Living Luncheon, held at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston.

Hoit’s program is in use in all Allerton Houses, and soon the company will roll out a new App for families and residents.

The family-owned Welch Group offers assisted living communities along the South Shore, in Duxbury, Hingham, Marshfield, and Weymouth. The company includes two independent living communities, the only continuing care retirement community from Boston to Cape Cod offering garden homes and two memory care assisted living communities.

Exercise: Keep Moving to Stay Physically and Mentally Strong

senior fitness

Seniors keeping fit with exercise.

What do you envision when you hear the word “exercise?” A young, fit person running a marathon? Muscular individuals bench pressing twice their weight? Well maybe it’s time to rethink the meaning of the word. In its purest form, exercise is simply keeping your body moving. It is well-documented that exercise reaps tremendous physical and mental benefits for seniors. For example:

  • Cardiovascular exercise gets the heart pumping faster, which helps distribute oxygen and nutrients to the whole body. It can give you more energy and improve your endurance.
  • Strength training helps you build and maintain muscle, (more…)
