I Won’t Miss the Slippery Sidewalks Says Resident of Allerton House in Duxbury

DSC_8676-Allerton House at DUxbury Resident Dan Hardenbergh

Allerton House at Duxbury resident Dan Hardenbergh says he quickly made himself at home at the Allerton House Assisted Living Community.

Dan Hardenbergh discovered Allerton House while recuperating at Bay Path Rehabilitation & Nursing Center from a winter fall near his Back Bay home in Boston. He says, “I visited Allerton House and it looked wonderful.”

Dan felt welcome from day one, saying, “I was invited to join the Village Voices choral group, which is currently rehearsing for a spring concert.” In the summer, Dan directed a new men’s chorus at the community, noting, “Developing the program was a group process and a lot of fun.”

Recognizing how important a warm welcome was to him, Dan now volunteers to welcome and assist Allerton House at Duxbury newcomers. He is also a skilled bridge player who plays two or three times a week. Committed to maintaining his strength, he is a regular at the community’s fitness center, too. “I’m really enjoying being here,” says Dan. “And I won’t miss the slippery sidewalks this winter.”

A Song Brightens the Spirits at Allerton House in Quincy

Allerton House at Quincy resident Bonnie Costello (foreground) brings together other residents in song.

There’s even more music in the air these days at Allerton House at Hancock Park, thanks to a bright idea from Bonnie Costello. Bonnie, a resident of the Quincy assisted living residence since 2012, says, “We have a lot of entertainment programs here, and I noticed a lot of people singing along. So I thought, ‘How about starting a singing group?’”

Bonnie, who sang in her church choir for 20 years, brought the idea to the activities director, and the residents’ signing group began meeting this summer, singing the classics like “My Wild Irish Rose,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” and “Yankee Doodle.” “Everyone is welcome,” says Costello. “You just have to like to sing!”
